Don't you hate chores? Mopping the floor, washing the dishes, doing the laundry and the list goes on. Well, I get frustrated every time I am asked to do chores even though I know I have to. My sister and I are responsible for keeping certain areas of the house clean, but it always feels like there's something else that needs to be done.
My parents say that doing chores teaches us responsibility and helps us learn to take care of ourselves. I get that, I really do. But when I'm in the middle of doing homework or hanging out with friends, being asked to drop everything and clean the bathroom feels like the worst thing in the world.
We have a chore chart in our house, and we're supposed to rotate tasks every week. But somehow, I always end up with the worst ones cleaning the toilets, taking out the trash, or scrubbing the kitchen floor. My brother always seems to get the easy jobs like setting the table or feeding the dog.
I've tried to negotiate with my parents "Can I do it later?" or "Can my brother do it this time?" But they're not having it. They say that everyone needs to contribute, and that's just how it is. Fair enough, I guess, but it doesn't make me hate chores any less.
The one thing I've learned is that if I just do the chore quickly without complaining, it's over faster and my parents are happier. But that's easier said than done when I'm already tired from school and just want to relax. Maybe one day I'll appreciate having learned these skills, but for now, I'll just keep doing them and complaining about it.
